For investors who desire low risk and guaranteed income, US goverment bonds are a secure investment because these bonds have the financial backing and full faith and credit of the federal government. Municipal bonds, also secure, are offered by local governments and often have (21) ______such as tax-free interest.

Some may even be (22)______ Corporate bonds are a bit more risky.

Two questions often (23)______ first-time corporate bond investors. The first is“If I purchase a corporate bond, do I have to hold it until the maturity date?" The answer is no. Bonds are bought and sold daily on (24)______ securities exchanges. However, if you decide to sell your bond before its maturity date, you're not guaranteed to get the face value of the bond. For example, if your bond does not have (25)______ that make it atractive to other investors, you may be forced to sell your bond at a (26)______ ,i.e., a price less than the bond's face value. But if your bond is highly valued by other investors, you may be able to sell it at a premium, i.e., a price above its face value. Bond prices generally (27)______ inversely (相反地) with current market interest rates. As interest rates go up, bond prices fall, and vice versa(反之亦然). Thus, like all investments, bonds have a degree of risk.

The second question is “How can I (28)______, the investment risk of a particular bond issue?"

Standard & Poor's and Moody's Investors Service rate the level of risk of many corporate and government bonds. And (29)_____, the higher the market risk of a bond, the higher the interest rate. Investors will invest in a bond considered risky only if the (30)______ return is high enough.

Part I Read and Answer (30 points)

Direction: In this part, there are two passages, each followed by five questions. Read the two passages carefully and then answer the questions briefly after each passage. All the answers should be written on the answer sheet.

Passage One

We commonly think of sportsmanship in connection with athletic contests, but it also applies to individual outdoor sports. Not everyone who picks up a fishing rod or goes out with a gun is a sportsman. The sportsman first of all obeys the fish and game laws, not because he is liable to be punished as a violator, but because he knows that in the main these laws are made for his best interests.

The fllowing are some of the things that those who would qualify for membership in the sportsmanship fraternity (圈内人) will do.

Take no more game than the bag limit provided for by the fish and game laws. The person who comes back from a trip boasting about the large number of fish or game taken is not a sportsman but a game hog (贪得无厌的捕猎者).

Observe the unwritten rules of fair play. This means shooting game birds only when the birds are“on the wing". For the same reason, do not use a shotgun to shoot a rabbit or similar animal while it is stting or standing still.

Be careful in removing ilgal or undersized fish from the hook. This should be done only after wetting the hands. This is necessary because the body of the fish is covered with a thin, protective film which will stick to your dry hands. If the hands are dry when the fish is handled, the flm is torn from the body of the fish. Without the protective film, the fish is more easily attacked by diseases. If you wish to release a fish that is hooked in such a way that it will be impossible to be close to the hook as convenient. In a remarkably short time, the hook will break down and the fish will remain almost unharmed. Fish have been known to feed scessfully while hooks were still in their lips.

Be sure of the identity of your target before you shoot. Many useful and harmless species of wildlife are thoughtlessly klld by the uninformed person who is out with a gun to kill whatever flies within range.

31. Why should the sportsman first of all obey the fish and game laws?

32. What are people called when they break the bag limit and boast about their big catch?

33. Why should a sportsman only shoot game birds“on the wing"?

34. What are people advised to do before they remove ilegal or undersized fish from the hook?

35. What should sportsman do to avoid klling rare species of wildlife?

Passage Two

Landing men on the moon captured the public imagination like few other events this century. It had less to do with science than with demonstrating superiority during the cold war.

Although putting people into orbit is now routine, traveling further is not. Most spacecrafts are unmanned these days but missions are still unpredictable; a spacecraft was destroyed on the approach to Mars only last month.

Our sights are set on Mars because people still hope to find life there- not the movie director's idea of a martian, but rather micro-scopic forms of life hidden beneath the surface to protect them from the cold. Another possible home to life is Jupiter's moon, Europe, which seems to have slush beneath its ice crust that is kept warm by tides. But exploration is a long way off.

Beyond our own solar system, we will keep up the search for planets that might sustain life. We now know that stars other than our Sun have planets, but there's still a big difference between finding life and itelligent life.

You can say:“There are so many stars, some of them with planets, that some of those planets must be conducive to life." But even if that were true, that life might have happened millions of years ago or be going to happen mllins of years in the future. The prospects aren't great.

What technology can do is to hang a receiver on a radio telescope to search for signals from space that might have been created arifilly. Nothing much has been found so far, but it's a search that has captured people's imagination.

36. What is the real reason to land men on the moon?

37. Why do people set sights on Mars?

38. What is another possible home to life?

39. Stars other than our Sun have planets, some of which are conducive to life. But the prospects aren't great. Why?

40. What can technology do to find life in space?

Part IV Translation

Section A (25 points)

Direction: Translate the followving passage from English to Chinese. All the answers should be written on the answer sheet.

Nanotechnology and biotechnology will dominate technological development in the next 20 years and will be incorporated into all aspects of technology that affect our lives on a daily basis. Charles Vest made the case that the core of technological innovation has shifted from physics and high-speed telecommunications to biology and the environment. The rapidly advancing fields of biotechnology and nanotechnology are at the core of these developments.

Early uses of nanotechnology range from the prosaic use of nanofabrics in pants to prevent stains to the exciting developments of new agents for medical imaging. Biotechnology has already contributed to the development of life saving medicines and food crops. Both nanotechnology and biotechnologies have suesfully made the transition from basic research to the development of products and services.

Nanotechnology and biotechnology are poised for even greater success over the next 20 years.

Nanotechnology can be used to create more efficient solar cells that produce electricity cheaper than coal, to deliver drugs to precise cells in the body, and to build terabyte data chips the size of postage stamps. Biotechnology is on the verge of a revolution in which genetic components are standardized and interchangeable.

Section B (25 points)
